I watched it go, then rose and began walking again. The encounter had left me with a grin on my face, and I couldn't wait to tell Mel.
I'd barely taken three steps when I stopped again. Between me and the roof of the chalet stood a hedge of conifers, and beyond it I heard voices. Our chalet didn't have a hedge, and neither of the voices was Mel's.
Curiosity got the better of me as I recalled the light I'd seen at night. My conscience told me to turn around and retrace my steps to the stream, but my mind didn't want to listen.
